50 Years of North Bondi Grocer

Last Sunday the Tsarkirios family marked 50 years of the doors being open to their North Bondi family business, North Bondi Grocer (originally Nio and Tony’s) opposite the bus terminus on Campbell Parade. On the 22nd February 1976 Tony, seen here in his favourite forklift) and brother Nio turned the key to what would become a beloved neighbourhood pantry. You can get pretty much anything there. And if they don’t have it they’ll try to get it in – within reason!

Nio left the business in 2020 and since then it’s been Tony and all the generations of his family that have kept the place going. It’s gruelling work. Tony is usually there by 5 am and as you can see he still does a lot of the physical work himself. He is helped out by son John as well as daughter Irini (who also runs her own business), wife Anna and from time to time various grandchildren. Son Theo is also involved as the finance and backend guy so we don’t see him on the floor.
