When we lived on Lamrock Avenue in South Bondi, Birichina was our local café. Bevan Higginson owned it at that time – and Max and Jennifer worked for him. But since we went north Max and Jennifer have gotten together and had two children. What’s more, Max and his business partners bought Birichina from Bevan and turned it into a very lively place for food and coffee that we still like to visit. (Remo also loves that they stock browsing copies of all 4 REMORANDOM volumes :)

We didn’t know Jennifer very well back then as she was busy behind the counter but we bumped into her recently when she was enjoying being in front of the counter sitting down with the aforementioned children.

What’s your Bondi story?

“I’m originally from Canada and came here backpacking on a gap year, and never went back! Bondi’s been home for 15 years now. I started as a barista at Birichina Cafe, where I met my husband Max (he’s from France). He now owns the café, and we’ve got two beautiful kids who are always there. They absolutely love it. You might even spot them making coffee!”

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

“The kids wake me up way too early. We do the school hustle, then head to Birichina (of course) for coffee and crepes. Starting the day with that view and sunshine? There’s nothing better.”

Is there one thing you’d like people to know about you?

“I love Tuesday night sessions with the Bondi Soft Sand Run Club. It’s a killer workout and so much fun, even if I’m super slow! In summer, we finish with an ocean dip and dinner at the RSL. Best group of people and an amazing way to kick off the week.”
