Yasu Hirai
Yasu Hirai
This man knows swimming. In 2012 Yasu became the first male open water swimmer from Japan to compete in the Olympics. He came 15th in the 10 km event. Then in the 2016 games he came 4th. These are just to name two of his many achievements in his field. The podium was getting tantalising close.
Unfortunately, due to illness Yasu didn’t qualify for the the 2020 Olympics in his home country.
“Losing the opportunity to compete made me feel like I lost my ikigai and direction in life, affecting me both physically and mentally.
I moved to Bondi in April 2023 to seek a more positive mindset. I met David at Icebergs, and he invited me to swim with Salties. Witnessing the genuine enjoyment of Salties sparked envy within me. I realized that my approach to ocean swimming was too serious and Black or White. I knew in my heart that I wanted to swim in the ocean like them.
Swimming at Bondi releases endorphins, has a saltwater effect, that's healing for me. Without David and Salties, I would still be struggling with my health. I might have ended up hating swimming forever. I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to connect with all of you and rediscover the pure joy of swimming activity. I could have a new Ikigai. Arigato so much for including me!"
