Aboriginal Engravings Ben Buckler

Bondi was traditionally inhabited by the Gadigal, Birrabirragal and Bidjigal. Evidence of Aboriginal occupation and culture predating European settlement is abundant. Not the least of which is this turtle engraving at North Bondi.

Originally there were five figures in this area of Ben Buckler. One was destroyed by construction and the others are covered by vegetation. This turtle is the only one that remains visible.

It was regrooved without consultation in the 1960s by Waverley Council – a not uncommon practice back then.

The whale engraving was destroyed by construction
