Nyokabi “Kabi” Kuguru
Kabi was born in Kenya but is now an Australian citizen.
The youngest of 9 children who all went out to different parts of the world to do their higher education, Kabi chose Australia for her studies. Her father studied in New Zealand and worked in Victoria and “that is what spurred my interest in seeing this side of the world” and where she has ended up living and working. Initially working in medical communications and education, then for a time in general project management, Kabi finally came to be doing something more meaningful to her and that connected her to her home country. Earlier this year she founded the Mount Kenya Coffee company that partners with community co-operatives in Kenya fostering links between the two countries.
“There’s so much focus on coffee roasting and latte art (it’s mostly what we as consumers see) and I wanted to bridge the gap and share stories from the producing side as well, so the origin is included and not forgotten in the storytelling of coffee.”
Kabi lives locally, “I’m really well located so I like to walk down to the different beaches or to Centennial Park. Mornings here are always the best.”
