On his way to Surf Squad

Alex Tucker Surf Squad

When our son was growing up in Bond, like many before and since, he spent most of his time in the ocean and surfing. We were confident in his abilities to handle varying conditions because of his time spent with Barney Quinlan and side kick Alex Tucker, learning ocean skills in the first iteration of Surf Squad.

Barney has since left to live on the South Coast and Alex has taken up the Surf Squad “rails”.

The kids learn everything there is to know about being safely in the ocean and are put through all sorts of drills to get them there.

Alex’s family have been living in Bondi since 1983.

He was born in the front room of a house on Lamrock Avenue in 1984. The family then moved a bit further up the street where they have lived ever since.

We profiled Alex back in 2016. This is what he had to say about living in Bondi:

“What I love about Bondi is the localism. Over 30 years I’ve grown accustomed to meeting neighbours in the street, hoots and beeps from mates’ cars, watching the next generation of grommets at Bondi Boardriders grow up, Bondi United footy matches at Waverley [Oval], the mothers and fathers raising families around the beautiful beach, and so much more … Many differ on their opinion of the local, but I will not debate it here. I will say this. Bondi is MY HOME! As I would show you respect when in your home, I would like to see that it is understood by those in my home so we may enjoy it together. On a whole I think the world needs a little more tolerance and understanding, the chance to foster more love, between the people all over the world. Love ya heaps.”
