If you live in Bondi you would have come across Alex. And if you surf here you have definiteIy come across him.
Being such a keen surfer led to a bad case of surfer’s ear (a condition where bony growths develop in the ear canal due to repeated exposure to cold water and wind) which is why he is always armed with a knob of blue tack tucked into his watch when he goes out.
“I have lived in Bondi since I was young boy. Since then I have been fortunate enough to live at various addresses right opposite the beach. These days I also spend a lot of my time down the south coast where my lovely girlfriend lives.
I generally get up around 6:30 every morning. Have a light breakfast of fruit and coffee and then, depending on the conditions, go surfing or stand up boarding, or a soft sand run and a swim. Sometimes in winter I'll be the only person running on the sand into ice cold south westerlies and I say to myself where are they all now? Only the true believers hit the beach on those type of days, lol.
I think I have developed a love/hate relationship with Bondi. Thumbs down to crazy crowds, hoons racing up and down and trying to find a parking spot sometimes is like fossicking for gold. But YEAH! to the diversity of people, the food choices, that you can just walk to everything you need and, as a surfer, that Bondi is dead off-shore in the summer north-easterly winds. A lot of people are against all the change occurring in Bondi. I don't mind as there will always be change. But the one thing to me that has always remained the same, since I was a little kid hitting the waves on 'rubbery' surf mats we would stand up, is the beach itself, the sand, water and the waves. It's been a constant and I hope that never changes. “
